Google announced that it may withdraw from China after what it called a "sophisticated and targeted" cyber-attack originating from the country. The primary goal of the attack, it said, was to gain access to the e-mail accounts of Chinese human-rights activists. A spokesman for Baidu, its main Chinese competitor, which dominates the internet-search market in China, said Google's announcement was hypocritical, and its decision was financially motivated.
